Women heroes...meet one of mine In life, I have met those who have inspired me through their courage, their perseverance and the passionate pursuit of their dreams; last night I met such a woman when I watched this video of her that I wanted to share with all of you:

I showed this to my students on Friday. I thought that it was important for them to see prejudice and that if really does color how we think of people. We had been talking about fallacies, and how they affect us. I think Susan Boyle made a pretty convincing argument to refrain from judgment.

My heroine does not have a website... but she was a wonderful woman with many unsung attributes, my Grandmother. She raised her family of three in the Great Depression, survived a husband who was lamed in World War I, and managed to make a meager living from providing laundry services for the teachers in her tiny community. Her strong spirit and positive approach to life are daily goals for me.

Bogey, bless your grandmother! My mother was like that. Truly my hero, she remains one of the most powerful people in my life. I rarely ask WWJD, I ask instead, what would Mom do? Before she died, Mom weilded power over me that was indeed hypnotiy strong. Even though I was HER guardian, she still ran things. She died her way, and in her terms. What did she do in life that was spectacular? Nothing. But she did things that achieved folk hero status for me. She survived her parents hating her, the Depression, WWII, two terrible marriages (into which she was forced by the ablve mentioned parents)and working 3-5 jobs throughout my childhood. Still, she had a great spirit and a truly wicked sense of humor. Hers was a hard, hard life. Alw

Your mother's spirit lives on... What did she do in life that was spectacular? She gave the world "lovejoana" which I think was a spectacular achievement.
