They sound like anarchists. Was anybody bodily harmed? I would dismiss it as it sounds as though nothing was really disrupted. It's a shame it takes drastic action like that to gain attention. It really sounds infantile! Why don't you look into the group yourself? In addition, what about the latina transgendered person Perhaps that group could write a book themselves? They sound frustrated!

Sounds like a flock of sheep that is mislead by some crazed shepherd who is always after someone to oppose. Anyone can prove to be a dangerous force if enough people are involved. I t should be watched... If further incidents fail to get the attention they seek, they may choose to act more violently. As far as Madison goes, yea... seems about right. Things are a bit quieter up north but we ARE pretty closeted.

The LG community has down played Silvia Revira's part in the NYC post Stonewall movement. Just after the riot, the movement was largely driven by a complex mix of L's G's amd T's. At the time, Just about the only thing a trans woman could do to support herself was sex work on the streets. It was a very hard life and they looked and acted like it. This really put off the more mainstream mostly gay men, men that were largely closeted when it suited their needs. The trans women were pushed out of the movement. I have no idea how Mr. Carter treated this aspect of intra community relations, and I can not condone disruptive behavior, but likely the protesters have a valid point. For what it is worth, the first riot was 3 years before in SF. Called the Compton Cafiteria Riots, and it resulted in the GL leasion unit of the SF police department. It was the model all other police departments used to respond to pressure about harrasment of the LGBT commnuity. This was usually the first thing a jurisdiction did when pressured. What differed about Stonewall, was the group it energized was not satisfied by just a reduction of police harresment.

I'd say yes but not in New York City She was very active until her death on a variety of issues (ie. being more inclusive of young people, sex workers and people of color). People here especially politiy minded people do remember her at least she seems to come up a lot in discussions with a variety of people including gay men. I think in other parts of the country people (mis)remember Stonewall as mostly being gay men and drag queens who were cross dressing gay men. I don't know what options people had at the time in terms of transitioning but I think a lot of the "drag queens" were probably people who today would be under the trans umbrella. Anyway I think people in New York are more likely to remember her just because she was a figure in local politics and things for young people here like Hetrick Martin wouldn't have happened without her so her name comes up a lot.

Anyone who met her would be very unlikely To forget her. A very close friend worked with her to form PONY. She could be loud and abrasive, and this was years after leaving the streets and sex work

another strange thing is in various articles I've read her described as "divisive" or a "rabble-rouser" but here people remember her as a charitable figure who worked with poor people and . If I had to guess why aside from her being involved in local politics I'd say NYC is a relatively safe place for gender normative LGB people to live, not be discriminated against and have a nice standard of living so LGB people here might be more ready to see that people she advocated for (ie.sex workers or teenage runaways) have it pretty rough whereas in other parts of the country there might be more tension over who "owns" Stonewall because everyone is in a bad situation.

I think also, as she became known She softened her taticts. She had erned her attention and no longer needed to fight for it. I really try to stay out of the "who owns Stonewall" thing, it is something we will never know the answer to and this far out, really does not matter much. I hope my words did not come across trying to "claim" it for any group.

no I knew what you meant I've also run in to people here in the city who knew women who were at Stonewall though some of the various accounts act as though women weren't there. It would be nice if someone tried to gather up more first person accounts while people are still alive.

It would, but at this point, I believe It is a bit like Woodstock. There are now more people who claim to have been at Woodstock then showed up in 1969
